Borusan Asım Kocabıyık Anatolian Vocational High School has been one of the Foundation’s most important projects. Following its inauguration at a groundbreaking ceremony led by the 9th President of the Republic, Süleyman Demirel, and the President of the Foundation, Asım Kocabıyık, the school was opened in the 1998. In the academic year of 2006-2007, the school became a technical high school and was renamed as Borusan Asım Kocabıyık Anatolian Technical High School. It is located in Beylikdüzü, which has recently become a densely populated area.
The school, which is built on an area of 24.000 m2 with a closed area of 10.000 m2, cost US$ 5.3 million. Based on the architectural project that was developed by Yıldırım Sağlıkova, the school has 21 classrooms, 17 workshops and four laboratories as well as a library and an art studio.
The school also has a closed gymnasium that covers an area of 1.100 m2, and a 920m2 multi-purpose meeting and seminar hall with a seating capacity of 400 people that also accommodates the needs of the region.
Focusing on the deficiencies in vocational training, the school acts as a role model for other investments in this area. It initially had four English and two German preparatory classes until the year 2006. After it became a technical high-school, these preparatory classes were cancelled while the school remained to give a four-year education. Foreign language lessons in the preparatory clas ses were spread over this four year period. The school has three departments consisting of Computer Technology (English), Electrics and Electronics (English and German) and Motor Vehicles Technology (English and German).
Excruciating attention to detail has gone into the planning and implementation of a contemporary vocational educational program. The architectural arrangements were made for the physically handicapped to give them total freedom of movement throughout the building.
With a capacity of 600 students, the school facilities were offered for the evening training program to the students who had studied at the Automotive Department of the Vocational College in Beykent University between 2002 and 2006.
Believing that it takes more than modern buildings and equipment to train qualified graduates, the Ministry of Education, along with its Regional Representatives will prepare new projects aiming to help the educators improve themselves. Having received an ISO 9002 Quality Certificate in 2002, it has become the first school in Istanbul to have the ISO Certificate.
The school has a very successful basketball team. The most important scouting activities include the first aid courses and search and rescue civil defense courses repeated each year. The school also organizes field trips and camping activities in nature.
For the last two years, Borusan Asım Kocabıyık Technical High School has been carrying out a joint project with Gelsenkirchen College in Germany called
"Turkey on its way to the European Union". The objective of this project is to mutually learn a foreign language and improve the foreign language speaking ability of the students. The students and teachers of both schools pay visits to each other’s countries.
